The Original Badass

The only time that I am really truly happy – when I feel at my best – is when I’m on the stage.
Etta James

A true American original died today.  Ms. Etta played it all; spanning blues, funk, pop and rock and roll.  Though she’s known mostly for her Chess Records years, her 80’s resurgence, and a personal life that was more than a little up and down; it was her stage performance that cemented her in the American landscape.  Her voice ranged from soothing and sweet, to rocking and ferocious.  She was a force to be reckoned with and never left her audience feeling cheated.

I saw her back in the 90s, watched her bump and grind and wail, sometimes she had to sit down, sometimes she couldn’t resist dancing.  She was a big beautiful sweaty mess, and I’ll miss her.

I saw my fair share of Dead shows, too, but somehow I never knew that they performed together!  Etta and the Dead, how about that – I don’t think you can get anymore American than that – Man that must have been one hell of a back stage!

They said that Etta James is still vulgar. I said, Oh, how dare them say I’m still vulgar. I’m vulgar because I dance in the chair. What would they want me to do? Want me to just be still or something like that? I’ve got to do something.
Etta James

R.I.P Ms. Peaches, I’m sure there’s a stage waiting for you wherever you are…
